The word ‘encaustic’ is derived from the Greek word, ‘enkaustikos’ which means to burn in.
This is an ancient archival art form which pre-dates oil and tempera painting.

It requires heat in order to melt beeswax, along with a tree sap/gum called damar resin, to create a painting medium. Encaustic paintings such as the Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits have existed for circa 2000 years.

Artist quality dried pigments are added to molten encaustic medium to create wax-based
paints.

An encaustic painting should be created on a durable, rigid, absorbent surface such as a
cradled wooden panel. Canvas and paper are not ideal, given their lack of rigidity and the
paint may crease and flake.
Each layer of encaustic paint also has to be fused to the previous layer with heat to ensure
that it is properly bonded and will not detach over time. An encaustic gesso can be applied
before painting or in lieu of same, several layers of encaustic medium can be applied,
followed by encaustic paint.

The inclusion of damar resin increases the melting point of encaustic medium. Once treated
with care, encaustic paintings will not melt in your home or office space. Encaustic paintings
should be treated like any other item of fine art and kept away from extremes in temperature.

They should not be placed or hung in direct sunlight or close to direct heat sources. When framing, it is recommended to eliminate glass panes as this is not required to protect an encaustic artwork and further, glass may cause the temperature with the enclosed frame to
increase.

Given that this medium requires a heat source for melting and fusing the paint, this may not
be suitable for small children, especially if they are unsupervised.
